EHLTF to attend the European Conference and World Health Organization (WHO) Global Consultation "Striving to achieve self-sufficiency", Madrid, Spain

During the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, a European Conference and a World Health Organization (WHO) Global Consultation “Striving to achieve self-sufficiency” are planned to be held on March 23rd to 25th, 2010 in Madrid (Spain). The Conference is organized by the Spanish Presidency of the European Union with the support of the European Commission. The Consultation is organized by the Spanish presidency and the WHO in cooperation with The Transplantation Society. The European Conference, to be held on the 23rd of March, 2010, will perform a comprehensive review of the current situation and main challenges in organ donation and transplantation within the European Union. The steps taken by the European Commission in the field, in particular with regard to the proposal for a European Directive on safety and quality aspects and the Action Plan promoting the cooperation between Member States, will be presented. Finally, the WHO programme related to the transplantation of organs, cells and tissues will be discussed, along with the definition of the concept of self-sufficiency as a way of increasing the availability of organs for transplantation, while promoting ethical practices throughout the world. Following the European meeting, the Third WHO Global Consultation on Donation and Transplantation will take place on the 24th and 25th of March 2010. These combined events will bring together relevant stakeholders in the field. It is expected that up to 70 countries will be represented. This will provide the opportunity of sharing experiences and views and constructing a set of recommendations applicable to different realities that will make transplantation more accessible to citizens across the world. EHLTF President Terry Mangan accepted the invitation of the Organizing Institutions to participate in the European Conference on March 23, 2010 as a speaker. His presentation will be "The patients perspective" within the review of "The initiatives of the European Union in the field of Organ Donation and Transplantation".
