World Day and European Day of Organ Donation 2009

he 5th World Day and 11th European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation were celebrated in Berlin on October 4th 2009. This unique event highlighting Organ Donation and Awareness had been organised to attract national and international guests to the Brandenburg Gate on Sunday, October 4th. Famous artists, VIPs and bands entertained the audience and many booths offered information and activities regarding Organ Donation and Transplantation. The motto was: You have the power to donate life – be an Organ Donor. The event in Berlin was arranged by the Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation (DSO) and its international partners including the World Health Organisation (WHO), Fairtransplant and the Council of Europe. The aim was to raise public awareness about Organ Donation and to draw attention to the worldwide shortage of donor organs. In front of the Brandenburg Gate and along the Avenue of June 17th numerous booths were set up where German health institutions and patient groups informed about Organ Donation and organ donor cards. The European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation was represented there as the only international patient organisation with an information booth too. This was an outstanding opportunity to meet with many interested visitors as well as with friends and colleagues from abroad and to provide answers to important questions related to Organ Donation and Transplantation. All six members of the Management Committee manned the booth at various times during the day. Following the celebration of the Organ Donation Day the 10th International Organ Donation Congress of the International Society for Organ Donation and Procurement (ISODP) took place in Berlin from October 5th to 7th. This congress provided a platform for experts from all continents to exchange ideas through lectures, workshops and poster presentations and to identify new strategies to promote Organ Donation through improved coordination and international activities and cooperation. The EHLTF also met with various German patient groups in an effort to form a new united patient organisation and this work is still ongoing.
