A team of Greek Heart Transplant recipients climb Mt Olympos

On the weekend 4-5th July a team of Greek Heart Transplant recipients ascended Mt Olympos in Macedonia, Greece, to promote organ donor awareness, organ transplantation, and to thank their donors. The team was accompanied by members of their families, the parents of a heart donor and by two experienced mountaineers. The team climbed to the “Skala” location at an altitude of 2882 m. It was not foreseen to attempt to reach the summit “Mitikas” at 2918m exclusively for safety reasons as the path to the summit is extremely dangerous. The effort included 11 km uphill in a rough mountain path from the location “Prionia” at 1100 up to “Skala”, with an intermediate overnight stop at the “Spilios Agapitos” refuge camp at 2100m. Similarly, the second day after 5 km uphill the team had to descend the 11 km downhill. This is the first time that Heart Transplant recipients attempted such a physically demanding activity in Greece. The success of this venture depicts yet again the miracle of transplantation and points to the urgent need to intensify the efforts to increase life saving organ donations to meet the needs of ever increasing transplant waiting lists At the peak of Mt Olympos the Heart Transplant recipients, and the other members of the group raised their banners to send a message of hope to their friends and colleagues in Europe and at the same time to demand that National Governments give full support to the Intensive Care Units of hospitals/clinics to maximise the identification of potential donors and increase life saving transplant activity. The cost of the expedition was covered exclusively by the kind sponsorship of the “Phoenix Medical Supplies S.A.” company.
