25 years of heart transplantations in Norway

The first heart transplant operation in the Nordic countries was conducted in Oslo’s Rikshospital in Norway on 5 November 1983. The Norwegian heart and transplant association and the Rikshospital marked the anniversary with a moving and solemn event which also traced the history of Norwegian transplantations from the eventful first operation until the present day, as well as the past activities of the association. The first Norwegian heart transplant patient, Bente Saether, a young woman of 25 at the time of her operation, was present in this anniversary event. She has enjoyed good health throughout her post-operational life and still leads an active working life. The sister associations from other Nordic countries were also represented in the event. The participants greatly enjoyed meeting the pioneers of Nordic heart transplant activities and hearing their reminiscences about past times.
