20-year anniversary of the Finnish Heart and Lung Transplant Association SYKE

On 30 October the celebrations of the Finnish Heart and Lung Transplant Association SYKE took place in Helsinki, with lively participation from association members and guests from other Scandinavian countries. At the same time, the anniversaries of the first heart transplant 25 years ago and the first lung transplant 20 years ago were celebrated. The programme included a comprehensive seminar by Professor Dr. Jorma Sipponen, Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Helsinki University Hospital, about the status and results of heart and lung transplantation in Finland, as well as reports of the President of the Association, distinctions of merited members and the reception of guests. One of the highlights was the distinction of the Association’s outgoing President, Seppo Lösönen, for his long-standing successful activities. Jari Lauren, who was elected at the preceding general meeting, will be the new President of SYKE. We wish him all the best for his future work, a lot of success and above all good health. The European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation was represented in Helsinki by former President Terry Mangan and the current President, Arnulf Pohl, who expressed his congratulations on the celebrations and thanked the Finnish colleagues for the valuable work within the Managing Committee of the EHLTF. This was another opportunity to see good friends and colleagues again, talk about interesting topics, and exchange news and experiences in the area of heart and lung transplantation.
