12th European Day of Organ Donation, Tbilisi, Georgia.

Since 1998 the Council of Europe has planned the European Day of Organ Donation, which this year was celebrated on 23 October in Tbilisi, Georgia. The objectives of this event are to raise awareness of Organ Donation and Transplantation in public, to initiate a discussion on these topics and to promote Organ Donation. The day, which was under the motto “Become a Donor, Save Lives – Donated Organ, Saved Life”, was organised by Professor Dr. Gia Tomadze, the head of Transplantation surgery in Georgia, and his colleagues. The opening by personalities from politics and healthcare of Georgia, included presentations by representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and international experts in the area of Organ Transplantation. They were followed by interviews with Organ Recipients and their relatives. A song, “Song about Organ Donation” was presented to the audience. In the afternoon, the “Walk for Life”, which attracted a lot of attention among the public, led to the fortress located above the city, where after an impressive speech of Professor Tomadze, the “Declaration of Tbilisi” was signed by the participants. The 12th Day of Organ Donation, which was heavily advertised on TV, radio and in the press and which was attended by experts and guests from 27 countries according to the organisers, was concluded by the city festival “Tbilisoba” with music and different artistic performances. For the representatives of the European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation in Tbilisi, President Arnulf Pohl and Vice President André Lassooij, this was another opportunity to discuss current issues of Organ Donation and Transplantation with the members of the Expert Committee of the Council of Europe (CD-P-TO) and to initiate interesting contacts for an expansion of the European Federation.
