European Day of Organ Donation 2010, Ljubljana, Slovenia

On 16 October the European Day of Organ Donation, which supported by the EU and the Council of Europe, was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as in a number of other European countries. “Slovenija Transplant” organised this event with an attractive programme and invited participants from neighbouring countries. The programme consisted of a half-day seminar, where politicians from the healthcare sector and experts from transplantation medicine made presentations. Special attention was given to the speech of Professor Francis Delmonico, WHO, on “Self-supply in organ transplantation at the national level”. In the afternoon of 16 October a series of social and sports activities took place at the nearby Tivoli Park. The highlights were the planting of a “Tree of Life”, initiated by Novartis Slovenia, and the 8km “Run of life and joy”, which received special recognition through the participation of the Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor. The event found a dignified conclusion in a church service at the St. Nicholas Cathedral, which was held in commemoration of organ donors and their families. The European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation was represented by the Managing Committee in Ljubljana and conducted an MC meeting on this occasion, chaired by the new President Arnulf Pohl for the first time. At this point we would like to thank the management and team of “Slovenija Transplant” for the friendly welcome and hospitality.
