European Heart and Lung Transplant Games 2010

Viking, the Swedish Heart and Lung Transplant Association, hosted the 13th European Heart and Lung Transplant Games, which took place in Växjö, a beautiful town in the heart of the Smaland region, from June 30th to July 4th 2010. On the first day, in beautiful sunshine, a parade of delegations from 22 countries went from Stortorget through the city to the Elite Park Hotel, where the opening ceremony was held at the Christina Nilsson Hall of the Teaterparken. With the march of the delegations and with the help of the media, the attention of the public was once again drawn to the importance of Organ Donation and Transplantation. In his opening speech, Terry Mangan, the President of EHLTF, thanked the National Association Viking, the Local Organising Committee and all people and institutions involved for arranging the Games. In very clear words he pointed out the purpose of this event: a demonstration of the positive impacts of Organ Donation and Transplantation and commemoration of the Donors and their families, who have made the gift of a new life to many people. In the following days, with continued fine weather, roughly 450 athletes and their accompanying persons were enthusiastic about the perfectly organised competitions, the interesting framework programme, which offered a rich variety of activities, and the social events. At the internationally known sports centres of Växjö, which produced tennis players and athletes renowned worldwide, many participants again achieved remarkable performances. At the closing ceremony on the last day of the Games, President Mangan extended his thanks to the organisers and bore tribute to Peter Hansen, who organised the first Games in the Netherlands 21 years ago and whose widow was present that evening and during the Games. After awarding the special prizes and trophies and after introducing the newly elected President, Arnulf Pohl from Austria, the retiring President Terry Mangan was bid farewell with standing ovations after his 10 years of successful work for EHLTF – a very emotional moment for all participants. With the official handover of the EHLTF flag to the representatives of the Netherlands, where the Games will be held in 2012, the 13th Games of the European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation were closed. The European Heart and Lung Transplant Federation is committed to continue the tradition of the year 1989 and to promote and support the Games in the interest of all European Heart and Lung Recipients.
